Helen Lystra Studio
Curiosity may have killed the cat but it’s my best friend in my studio. I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember and have tried just about everything from drawing to pottery. I love to explore and try different media and techniques. Currently I’m exploring acrylics and abstracts.
Self-taught doesn’t really describe my art education. My degree is not in art; however, I did take several art classes as part of my humanities minor. I’ve also taken many workshops, still do and learned something from every one of them.
Grand Haven is home and I am constantly inspired by my surroundings and the many artist friends who live and work in the area. I'm also inspired by vintage papers, old stone walls, old boats and water -- always water.
I guess if I had to say why I make art it would have to be: “I’m a lousy housekeeper, making art gives me an excuse to be messy. What it really boils down to is that I make art because I just need to do it. That’s it, no search for the meaning of life or anything else, I just need to do it so I do.”
